Born in Arras in 1883 and died in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1970, André Barbier exhibited from 1903 at the Salon des Indépendants, then at the Salon d'Automne from 1909 to 1938 and the Salon des Tuileries from 1924 to 1931. A friend of the composer Claude Debussy, he was especially close to the critic Gustave Geffroy, who introduced him to Claude Monet: from 1916 onward, he was a familiar presence at Giverny. Geffroy was also the mutual friend through whom Monet and Georges Clemenceau had, in all likelihood, reconnected around 1890 — Barbier thus moved in Monet's circle, where Clemenceau too was a presence.
